Ro is a mixed Mexican/American, California-born-and-raised, trans & nonbinary artist based in Davis. Their work is a contemporary take on traditional Mexican folk art. Mostly. Ro is drawn to folk art because it’s so accessible, both in its creation and its consumption. They want everyone to be able to have original art they love. They draw on elements of both of their cultures to create new works that push how detailed and delicate paper can get while still maintaining structural integrity. The papel picado (cut paper) process is intensive. Ro creates single-layer pieces more reminiscent of typical papel picado, and complex multi-layer works that stray from tradition. Their work is colorful, vibrant, and playful, and Ro hopes it makes you smile.
